Colm Begley has been excluded from the Laois starting team for Saturday's Leinster SFC opener against Wicklow at O'Moore Park.

Manager Mick Lillis revealed this week that the Stradbally man has been struggling with a knee injury since the latter stages of the league and is doubtful for this weekend's first round clash in Portlaoise.

Lillis has included plenty of experience in his first championship selection in charge of the county with the likes of Mark Timmons and Darren Strong in defence, John O'Loughlin and Brendan Quigley in midfield and Ross Munnelly and team-captain Donal Kingston in attack.

After the disappointment of being relegated to Division 3 last month, the O'Moore men have been boosted by the appointment of Anthony Cunningham as coach in recent weeks.

Laois (SFC v Wicklow): Graham Brody; Stephen Attride, Mark Timmons, Paul Cotter; Damien O'Connor, Darren Strong, Gareth Dillon; John O'Loughlin, Brendan Quigley; Niall Donoher, Paul Cahillane, Evan O'Carroll; Ross Munnelly, Gary Walsh, Donal Kingston.
