Down's Ulster SFC preparations have suffered a blow with the news that goalkeeper Michael Cunningham suffered a serious knee injury over the weekend.

The Mourne County number one, who was one of their best performers during a disappointing league campaign, is currently waiting on the results of an MRI scan after injuring his knee in Castlewellan's league defeat to Kilcoo on Friday night.

"He picked up the injury last Friday night. We don't know the severity of it yet," Down manager Eamonn Burns informed The Irish News.

"He'll be scanned this week, hopefully today, definitely before Friday, and we'll know more then."

On a more positive note, Burns added: "Our other injuries are starting to clear up slowly but surely. Hopefully we'll be in a better shape in a couple of weeks' time.

"A lot of the injured players are back on the field running and doing bits of sessions, but not full sessions.

"Fingers crossed, everything will be cleared up in the next 12 to 14 days."
