St. Loman's Flanagan Cup defence opened with a 0-13 to 1-13 defeat to Tyrrellspass at TEG Cusack Park last night.

County star Ger Egan scored the only goal from the penalty spot just before half-time as the 'Tidy Town' avenged their 2013 SFC final loss to the Mullingar outfit.

There was a big upset in the preceding game as The Downs got the better of Mullingar Shamrocks on a 1-6 to 0-5 scoreline, with Dean Egerton scoring the only goal.

Athlone marked their return to the senior ranks with a 0-13 to 1-9 win over St. Malachy's in Rochfortbridge. John Stapleton kicked the winner for the Shannonsiders. Also in the 'Bridge, Caulry scored four unanswered points in the closing stages to edge out Coralstown/Kinnegad by 0-11 to 1-6.

In Saturday evening's games at TEG Cusack Park, Killucan held on for a 2-11 to 2-10 victory over Maryland, while Garrycastle beat last year's runners-up Castledaly by 0-14 to 1-4 after leading by 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time.

Meanwhile, there are fears for Loughnavalley's future as a club after they handed Delvin a walkover in their JFC opener at Cusack Park.
