Wicklow underage hurling is in the midst of a crisis as they struggle to field at minor level.

The county's hurling officer Sean Hayes was forced to sit down with 16 minor hurlers after a training session last weekend and give them the option of pulling out of the Leinster championship.

Wicklow are due to play Meath tomorrow (Saturday) in the opening round of the provincial campaign, but a serious lack of interest by clubs and players left Hayes with no option but to give the players the option of withdrawing from the championship.

Hayes revealed to the Wicklow People that the players present agreed to go ahead with the game.

"We sat in the middle of the hall after our training session and I told them "I'm giving you the option of playing or not against Meath".

"I sent messages and e-mailed clubs regarding this training session and we had 16 there and apologies from four or five other lads," said Hayes.

"So, I asked the players and to a man, they all said that they knew that it was difficult and they knew who wasn't turning up but every one of them wanted to go and play the game and represent Wicklow."
