Galway's Fiontan O'Curraoin

Experienced midfielder Fiontan O Curraoin is in a race to be fit for Galway's crucial Division 2 league clash with Fermanagh on Sunday.

The Micheal Breathnach's clubman is troubled by a groin injury and manager Kevin Walsh said he will wait until this (FRI) evening before making a call on him.

Victory in the two remaining games against Fermanagh and away to Cavan will probably be enough to end Galway's five-year stay out of the top tier and Walsh said their preparations for a big finish have been boosted by a training camp in Portugal last week.

"The camp went really well, there was a heavy workload but it was great to get that amount of time together to train and hopefully it will benefit us now for the remainder of the league and into the championship," said Walsh.

The former All-Ireland winner has been working on several specific areas of Galway's play and the concession of just 0-11 from frees in their five league games so far has been encouraging.

And Walsh will be looking for that level of discipline from his defence in Tuam on Sunday with Fermanagh scoring 32 of their 58 points in the league so far from placed balls.

Tomas Corrigan and Sean Quigley have landed those frees, which accounts for 55% of the points scored by Fermanagh in their five games to date.

"We know we will need to produce a top class display to win this one. There is very little between the sides in the division and there is still a lot to play for," added Walsh.
