All-Star Ger Aylward will play no part for Kilkenny this year, according to Brian Cody.

The talented forward suffered a cruciate ligament injury during Glenmore's All-Ireland Club JHC success over Dungourney of Cork.

Speaking at the launch of Glanbia's new three-year sponsorship deal with the Cats, Cody told SunSport: "He's a huge loss.

"He had a terrific year but he has the injury nobody wants, which is the killing thing.

"It's not a question of when he'll be back, he won't be back this year. The cruciate is the dreaded one, and the killing thing is that it happens so simply.

"You're talking about nine months really, so essentially Ger's inter-county career this year is gone. But he's 23, he will be back in a massive way, we're just hugely disappointed he won't be around this year."

Cody revealed that Joe Lyng (arm injury) and Michael Fennelly will be sidelined for their Division 1A opener against Waterford.

"Joe Lyng has his arm in a sling but in terms of really serious stuff we're not too bad. With Michael, it's an accumulation of stuff."
