University of Limerick got their Fitzgibbon Cup defence off to a winning start this afternoon after overcoming DIT's challenge.

The Limerick students saw off their Dublin counterparts by 0-20 to 0-14 following a tight game at Parnells, where the champions were forced to dig deep in the closing quarter to clinch the win, with Tipperary's John McGrath contributing 0-7 from frees and Kevin O'Brien and Tommy Heffernan hitting 0-4 apiece over the hour.

At St Pat's, Waterford IT were comfortable winners over the home side with a 1-19 to 0-9 victory, which saw Johnny Hayes bagging the second-half goal for the victors.

Mary Immaculate were also impressive in a 1-16 to 0-13 win at NUIG, where Limerick star Declan Hannon struck 1-9 for the winners, while goals from Oisin O'Rorke (1-7) and Colm Cronin ensured a 2-12 to 0-13 triumph for UCD over UCC at the Mardyke.
