Kildare manager Cian O'Neill and his selectors have chosen defender Eoin Doyle as their captain for the 2016 campaign.

Doyle will have the honour of leading out the Lilies this year, although he is in a race against time to be fit for Sunday's NFL Division III clash against Westmeath at Cusack Park.

The Naas defender only made his debut back in 2012, but he has made huge strides since and represented Ireland in the International Rules series last year.

Two Mile House defender Peter Kelly has been named as vice captain and Doyle admitted to the Leinster Leader that it was a massive honour to be given the opportunity to lead out the side.

"It's a real honour, not something I was expecting but I am very proud that I have been chosen so I'm already looking forward to the role," said Doyle.

He added: I have been chosen as captain on what I have been doing to date but hopefully I can get fully fit first of all and then go on and do my talking on the pitch."
