Kelly cleared to continue playing with Kingdom

Kerry's Patrick Kelly, David Butler and Stephen Murphy celebrate their Ring Cup success

Patrick Kelly will line-out with Kerry's senior hurlers in 2016 following a successful appeal to Central Council.

Kelly was a member of Clare's All-Ireland winning squad in 2013 but took advantage last year of the association's rule which allowed him to transfer to a weaker county.

The Clarecastle man became a key part of the Kingdom's league promotion and Christy Ring Cup success last year but the transfer was brought into conflict with the GAA's Official Guide, which states that the transfer is ineligible once the adopted county reaches the same status as the original county.

However, a plea brought forward from Kerry to set aside the rule in this case has since been successful, which means Kelly will be eligible to play for Ciaran Carey's side in their NHL Division 1B opener against Laois on February 14.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Kerry hurling officer Ger McCarthy said: "A case was made on compassionate grounds on the basis that Pa Kelly played in Division 2 for Kerry. It was a common sense result."

Also eligible are Tipperary trio James Logue, Davy Butler, and John O'Neill, whom all featured under former manager Eamonn Kelly in various stages last season.

"We can continue to use any player we used in the last two seasons," said McCarthy.

"That's down to Ciaran Carey and the management now."
