Veteran Sarsfields' forward Kerril Wade has revealed that his father put his money where his mouth was at the start of the championship.

The New Inn side lifted their first county SHC title since the 1990's when they defeated Craughwell in a replay last Sunday.

However, at the start of the year, Sarsfields were 50/1 rank outsiders to lift the title, but that didn't deter Kerril Wade's father Benny from placing a wager on them.

Benny, who was part of the 1980 Sarsfields side that won the county title placed €20 on his native club and was paid out €1,020 for his gamble.

Speaking to the Connacht Tribune, Kerril said: "We were 50/1 to win it at the beginning of the year. My Dad actually stuck €20 on us at 50/1 at the start of the year. He informed me of that after the Gort game (semi-final).

"I'm absolutely over the moon. Ever since I was five years old I have been dreaming of this day; thanks be to God I'm after getting," stated a jubilant Wade.
