Plans for the erection of floodlights at Netwatch Cullen Park have moved a step forward.

A planning application has been lodged by Carlow GAA for the erection of the floodlights and it is hoped that the project could be finished by late 2016.

The Carlow County Board revealed that the cost of the lighting would be €350,000 but they have been allocated funds from Croke Park, Leinster Council and the National Lottery.

"From mid-August onwards, the days are getting shorter. In Friday evenings matches would not have to start at 7pm and could go to 7.30pm or later and finished under lights," said county secretary Ger Lennon.

A decision on the planning permission should be made by December and if the green light is given work will commence in the new year.
