The committee selected to appoint a new hurling manager in Wicklow has been criticised by a former player.

Former Wexford hurler Martin Storey has been appointed as the new senior hurling manager in the Garden County.

Storey is believed to have brought in Don Hyland and Clive Heffernan as his selectors, but former Wicklow hurler Michael Neary believes that neither man is taking on the role.

Neary went on to criticise the committee selected to choose a new manager stating in the Wicklow People that none of them had managerial or coaching experience at inter-county level.

The committee was made up of Jackie Napier, Brendan Cuddihy, Liam Kennedy, Sean Hayes and Michael Murphy.

Neary admits to being dumbfounded when he heard who had to be chosen to go on the committee.

"When I heard the names of those making up the committee I was gobsmacked," Neary states in the Wicklow People.

"The committee did not select itself and one has to be mindful of this but of the five people on the committee not one had ever managed or coached at adult level let alone had any inter-county managerial experience.

"Can you imagine in any walk of life going for an interview where not one of the interview board had the required knowledge and experience of the position up for grabs."

County chairman Martin Coleman hit back at the claims and stated: "The people involved would be classed as hurling people and they all have a very good background with club and county, and while they might not have managed they have seen different managers complete their terms with Wicklow."
