Pete McGrath says Eamonn Burns was always destined to manage Down.
Burns played on the 1991 and '94 All-Ireland winning Down teams which were managed by McGrath, and even then the current Fermanagh boss could see his managerial potential.
"Eamonn played on both All-Ireland winning teams. He has been around, he was on James McCartan's management team two years ago and he is a very affable individual," McGrath said in the Irish News of the new Mourne County manager.
"He's always keen to learn and I can remember when I took over the team first, even then Eamonn was very keen to learn. Even at that stage, he was saying he'd like to be involved in coaching Down teams in the future - I remember him saying that.
"He has done club management in the county so he'll know the players and the fact that he worked with James McCartan will be an advantage to him. He's not coming in completely starry-eyed.
"He has a lot of experience under his belt as a player and I'm sure he'll use that to very good effect in the years ahead."
