The Galway hurling management controversy has taken a fresh twist with reports that Anthony Cunningham offered to step down when a delegation of players came to him seeking change on the eve of his reappointment.

The Irish Times also reports that the delegation - which comprised captain David Collins, vice-captain Andy Smith, David Burke and Joe Canning - did not ask for the manager's resignation, but merely sought changes to his management.

A senior Galway GAA source said: "On the contrary, he offered to walk away but was told that this was not what was wanted. The players wanted changes and discussions took place about how they might be implemented."

After news emerged of the player heave against Cunningham, he made it clear to Galway officials that he wanted to stay on. The saga is set to drag on for another week after a meeting between county board officials and a reported 29 players failed to reach a satisfactory resolution at a meeting on Wednesday night.
