October 07, 2015

Padraig Moran was part of the 1988 All Ireland Under 21 winning Offaly squad.

A Garda Sergeant who drowned in Dublin's River Liffey on Monday has been named as former Offaly footballer Padraig Moran.

The 46-year-old, who was originally from Gurteen, Tubber, was based at Mountjoy Garda Station and had been living in Castleknock.

He was on the Faithful County team that won the 1988 All-Ireland U21 FC and, after moving to the capital, he continued to play gaelic football with the St Brigid's GAA club.

It's the second tragedy to hit Offaly GAA in the space of three days following the untimely death of up-and-coming star Adam Mangan in a farm accident on Saturday.
