Former Down All Star Danny Hughes has retired from club football at the age of 33.

Hughes, who announced his inter-county retirement in March of last year, has now decided to bring the curtain down on his 17-year club career with Saval. The half forward, who starred in the Mourne County's run to the 2010 All-Ireland final, has had more than his fair share of injuries down the years, but has now decided to bow out while he's injury-free.

"This year, thank God, I was playing well, I'd no injuries. I just thought I'd go out while I had a good season, so I'd have decent memories of it," he said in his Irish News column.

Hughes admits he is not a fan of the defensive tactics which are all the rage in Gaelic football right now.

"The thing about it is it's not one-on-one anymore, it's one versus three or four and it's very, very defensive, and I feel sorry for the really good player that, on a one-one basis, can skin men. The likes of [Mickey] Linden in his time, wee James McCartan, Peter Canavan, you don't get players like that anymore because of this defensive crap," he added.
