Mayo crisis: no confidence in management

The Mayo footballers have voted 'no confidence' in senior management duo Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly.

The joint-managers led the county to a fifth successive Connacht SFC crown during the summer, but Mayo were eliminated from the All-Ireland race when losing a semi-final replay to eventual champions Dublin.

Now it appears that the management team's days at the helm are over after just one season, with both The Mayo News ("Future of Mayo senior management uncertain") and The Connaught Telegraph ("Mayo GAA engulfed in crisis") running front-page headlines this week confirming ongoing rumours of player unrest that have been circulating since the weekend of the All-Ireland final.

Apparently, the players met at Breaffy GAA club on the eve of the All-Ireland and a majority vote of no confidence was recorded. Captain Keith Higgins and vice captain Cillian O'Connor subsequently relayed this information to Connelly and Holmes.

Mayo County Board has yet to react to the reports, but it would appear that - without the support of the players - the management's position has become untenable.
