Fine Gael TD John O'Mahony has called on Irish Rail to ensure that there are sufficient trains for Mayo supporters who wish to travel by rail to Sunday week's All-Ireland SFC semi-final against Dublin.

The former Mayo, Galway and Leitrim manager, who is chairman of Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications, said that he has also asked Irish Rail to ensure that overcrowding is avoided for those travelling to the game and that everybody gets a seat. The big Croke Park showdown is set to be an 82,300 sell-out.

"This is a huge game that has captured the interest of Mayo people," O'Mahony said.

"For many of them rail is the only option for travelling to Dublin. It is crucial that sufficient specials trains and extra carriages are put in place to cope with the increased demand. The game is a sell-out and the demand for tickets is on a par with an All-Ireland final.

"Another factor that must be considered is that third level students will also be travelling back to college for the new term and that will also lead to extra demand.

"All things considered the Mayo to Dublin route will be very busy that weekend with GAA supporters and students and it is the responsibility of Irish Rail to ensure that everyone that pays for a seat has a seat."
