Donal Vaughan has failed to have his appeal against the black card he picked up against Donegal in the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final overturned.

The Mayo defender was sent off in the 54th minute for a cynical challenge on Mark McHugh, and brought his case to the Central Hearings Committee (CHC) last night. However, the cynical behaviour infraction as alleged was proven and the original penalty stands.

Vaughan won't miss Sunday week's All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin, but another black card in that game - he was also black-carded in last April's Allianz League clash with Donegal - would rule him out of a potential All-Ireland final against either Kerry or Tyrone.

Meanwhile, the CHC has given its official explanation for throwing out Tyrone forward Tiernan McCann's proposed eight-week ban.

A statement this afternoon read: "Tiarnan Mac Cana was charged with engaging in conduct, which discredited the Association.

"The Central Hearings Committee found that the Infraction as alleged was not proven but that the facts proven disclosed the less serious Infraction of attempting to achieve an advantage by feigning an injury for which he should have been cautioned and shown a yellow card."
