Westmeath captain Ger Egan is confident that they can push on next year, despite their poor showing against Fermanagh in the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers.

The Lake County missed out on a glorious opportunity to reach an All-Ireland SFC quarterfinal, when they were outplayed by a determined Fermanagh side at Kingspan Breffni Park last Saturday.

Westmeath were forced to line out against the Ulster side without two of their talisman John Heslin and Egan, even though the latter did come on late in the game.

Speaking to the Westmeath Independent, Egan said: Of course, we will be back. Tom will be there with us and look what he's after doing - coming from 14 losses in a row, getting to a Leinster final and one game away from an All-Ireland quarterfinal.

"It was a massive disappointment to lose because we know we could beat Fermanagh on our day. But I know the lads will bounce back. I said in the dressingroom that this year was only the beginning. We have a very young team. We'll put the heads down. We have a great bunch of lads. You couldn't ask for anymore from them."
