One of the highlights of the weekend was Shane Walsh's return to the Galway colours against Derry.

Last year's Young Footballer of the Year nominee received a wonderful reception when he was introduced for the last five minutes of the All-Ireland qualifier in Salthill. Walsh's return came just six weeks after he broke his hand in a fatal car accident near Tuam.

"It's great to see him back and he's probably been missed over the last six weeks. He's a fine athlete and a fine young gentleman," Galway boss Kevin Walsh said.

"He stuck to the process of getting back to himself and he's been working hard."

The manager was delighted with the appetite his players showed in setting up a last-12 date with Donegal.

"For me, it was about the work-rate and how they were sticking together as a team.

"That can often be camouflaged, but that wasn't the case. We were happy that the performance up to half-time was good enough and it was case of sticking with it, and being patient."
