Eglish GAA club in Tyrone will have the gods on their side after issuing the coveted No.14 jersey to none other than the Pope.

Pete McCann has been doing a good job on the edge of the square for Eglish this season, so he will be surprised to hear that his jersey has now been given to a 78-year-old Argentinian.

The pontiff looked suitably chuffed as he was presented with the gaelic football shirt by the village's parish priest Fr Michael Toner in the Vatican.

"Perhaps the Pope's blessing of the jersey will bring luck to the football team and keep them in Division One next year," club secretary Brian Jordan quipped.
