Laois hurling has been plunged into crisis following the shock resignation of manager Seamus 'Cheddar' Plunkett.

Selector and Limerick native Ger Cunningham will take charge on an interim basis after Plunkett stood down following an emergency meeting held last night. The meeting was called after two members of the Laois squad had lined out in club games on Monday night against the manager's wishes.

The Portlaoise man has cited personal reasons for his departure and former Newtownshandrum and UL boss Cunningham will now take the reins for the Leinster SHC quarter-final against Offaly at O'Moore Park on Sunday week, June 7.

The news comes as a big setback to Laois hurling which has made big strides under 'Cheddar' over the past couple of seasons.

A statement from Laois PRO Tom Clear this morning read: "Laois county board regrets to announce Seamus Plunkett has stepped down as Laois senior hurling manager, citing personal reasons.

"Laois county board would like to thank Seamus for his contribution to Laois  hurling over the last number of years and look forward to working with him again in the near future.

"Ger Cunningham has been appointed as interim manager with immediate effect."
