Joe Brolly won't lose his job as an RTE pundit after his jibe about Marty Morrissey on live TV yesterday.

The former Derry star caused outrage when he compared Cavan's style of football - he previously labelled the Breffnimen 'the Black Death of Ulster football' - to the popular RTE commentator.

"Some people have said that Cavan football is as ugly as Marty Morrissey. I should apologise.. . to the people of Cavan for that," he said on RTE's Sunday Game ahead of Cavan's Ulster SFC quarter-final against neighbours Monaghan.

Brolly's jibe left presenter Michael Lyster stunned and sparked an immediate angry response on social media.

However, the outspoken pundit apologised for his harsh remark at half-time when saying: "I want to stay that what I said about Marty Morrissey was said in a spirit of affection not literally."

Last night, RTE communications manager Maureen Catterson confirmed that the national broadcaster would be taking no action against the Dungiven barrister.

"Joe made a comment and later apologised personally to Marty on air, so we will just leave it at that," she said.
