Joe Brolly's future as an RTE pundit could be in doubt after a joke he made about Marty Morrissey live on air backfired badly.
Brolly's dislike for Cavan's style of football is well-known - he previously labelled them 'the Black Death of Ulster football" - but today he went a step too far when comparing the Breffnimen to the popular RTE commentator.
"Some people have said that Cavan football is as ugly as Marty Morrissey. I should apologise.. . to the people of Cavan for that," he said on RTE's Sunday Game ahead of Cavan's Ulster SFC quarter-final against neighbours Monaghan.
Brolly's jibe left presenter Michael Lyster stunned and sparked an immediate angry response on social media.
The outspoken pundit apologised for his remark at half-time.
"I want to stay that what I said about Marty Morrissey was said in a spirit of affection not literally," he said.
Michael Lyster replied: I presume that's an apology. We appreciate that because it was out of order, Joe."
