Keith Higgins doesn't know if he will be involved with the Mayo hurlers for their crucial Christy Ring Cup clash with Kildare on Saturday.

The Ballyhaunis dual star hasn't featured for the hurlers' to date this season, with manager JP Coen claiming he was ordered not to hurl by the football management. However, this has been denied by joint-football boss Noel Connelly, who said he would never stand in the way of anyone wanting to play for their county.

"The straight answer is I don't know at the moment," the Mayo football captain replied when asked by the Western People at last week's launch of the Connacht SFC if he would be hurling next weekend.

"It's a lot easier to do when you're 22 or 23 years of age than when you get to this stage of a career. It's about trying to manage it, and unfortunately there was a decision taken last weekend, so we'll have to see what happens in two weeks' time.

"I talked to the two boys (Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes) about it; their preference was that I didn't play and JP would have preferred if I was there, but that's the way it goes.

"It was always going to come to a stage where something had to give, when the hurling had to take a backseat. Unfortunately, it happened this year, but we'll see what happens again."
