There is good news concerning Mark Poland this afternoon.

There were fears that the Down forward may have suffered a serious eye injury in the warm-up before yesterday's Allianz League Division 2 final against Roscommon. Poland, who was due to start the game, was hospitalised after a ball stuck him right between the eyes just before the throw-in.

But Down PRO Paul Rooney has confirmed that the Longstone clubman is recovering well and will be available for the Ulster SFC quarter-final against Derry on June 7.

"I spoke to Mark this morning and he's in good spirits," he told gaa.ie.

"They let him out of hospital last night. They thought he had a detached retina but he doesn't. His eye is still severely bloodshot and his vision is still affected, but he should be okay soon."
