Benny McArdle has confirmed he received two yellow cards during Down's defeat to Roscommon.

Like the vast majority in Croke Park, Mourne County manager Jim McCorry hadn't seen the first yellow in the 10th minute. Hence, his surprise when a yellow card for the Annaclone man was followed by a red two minutes before half-time.

"We couldn't understand why he saw yellow then red. Our county secretary (Sean Og McAteer), who was sitting beside us didn't see it, and he normally keeps a very good track on it," McCorry said.

"We went down to the linesman and he said that he did receive a yellow card previous to that. None of us picked it up."

But as he left the dressing-room afterwards, McArdle cleared up any doubts when explaining to the Irish News: "There were two flashed, yes. It was earlier on. It was for dragging back an arm.

"That was about the height of it. Obviously I am not in the mood for talking. In fairness, he (referee Maurice Deegan) did give me two, although I thought they were harsh."
