Sweetnam stars in Cork Con rugby win

Cork's Darren Sweetnam

As Cork prepare to face Dublin in today's Allianz Hurling League semi-final, you might be wondering what ever became of Darren Sweetnam.

The multi-talented Dunmanway youngster had the hurling world at his feet after a brilliant debut season for the Rebels in 2012, but he then signed a three-year contract with the Munster Rugby Academy, describing it as one of the most difficult decisions he has ever had to make.

In February, Sweetnam - who has represented Ireland in underage rugby and hockey - made his debut for Munster against the Cardiff Blues. He was back in the news yesterday when, lining out at full back, he scored a late breakaway try for Cork Constitution in their 24-9 victory over Clontarf in the Bateman Cup final.

Having signed a two-year contract with Munster earlier this year, it's unlikely that we will see the 21-year-old back on the hurling field any time soon. While no doubt wishing him well with his rugby career, Cork supporters would love to see him back.
