Mark Poland has rubbished the notion that Down are a team in transition.

While Benny Coulter, Dan Gordon and Ambrose Rogers are no longer part of the panel, Poland doesn't subscribe to the view that the Mournemen - who are on course for promotion from Division 2 of the Allianz League - are in rebuilding mode.

"In James' (McCartan) first year, everybody said we were in transition, but we got promotion and got to an All-Ireland final," the experienced attacker noted in the Irish Daily Mirror.

"Saying we're in transition is just an excuse. For the likes of myself, Conor (Laverty) and Aidan Carr, we want to push on and play in a league final.

"A few of us are coming to the end of our county careers so we want to play in Croke Park as much as we can and get Down back to Division 1 because that will only help the county in the long run."
