Queens University Belfast have lodged an appeal against their expulsion from the Sigerson Cup while IT Sligo are to consider their next move over the weekend.

Both colleges were found guilty of fielding ineligible players when the Martin McHugh coached IT Sligo got the better of their Belfast hosts after extra-time on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-8 at the Dub last week.

Queens successfully argued in front of the GAA's Higher Education Committee that IT Sligo's Stephen Doak played illegally as he is a full-time Sabbitical Officer with the Yeats County college.

The Belfast college, however, was also found to have infringed the rules by playing Stranmillis College students Ciaran O'Hanlon, Tony Donnelly and Greg McCabe.

Queens lodged an appeal with the GAA's Central Appeals Committee last night while Sligo IT's games development officer Michael Harte informed The Irish Independent that they have not yet made a decision on an appeal, and will not do so until a full meeting of their members at the weekend.

Saying that the college was "very disappointed" with the ruling against them, he added: "We were very satisfied with the eligibility of our player beforehand and felt we had all the necessary documentation to prove it."
