New Westmeath captain Ger Egan was glad to see the back of 2014.

Having failed to win a competitive game, Egan - who takes over the captaincy from Paul Sharry - admitted there was a lot of soul searching done over the winter months.

"It was just a terrible year," he remarked to The Irish Daily Mirror. "You'd almost doubt yourself as a footballer because you're looking back at the end of the year and there were just so many losses. You were in such a rut.

"But we've had a good start to this year. It's a cliche but after last year we really are taking every game as it comes now."

The O'Byrne Cup victory over DCU came as a massive relief to Egan and his team-mates.

"It was a pre-season game but it was a massive win for us, the lads just really put the shoulder to the wheel.

"It was a tough night but we ground out the win and it propelled us forward to the Longford game. We got the win there as well so there's been a huge boost in the camp."
