Wexford club not happy after GAA do u-turn on hooter

The hooter system will make its debut at The Sigerson Cup

The Wexford club that proposed the introduction of a clock/hooter system in gaelic games has reacted with bemusement to the GAA's decision to do a u-turn on the matter.

The use of a clock/hooter was passed at Congress two years ago and successfully trialled in last year's third-level competitions.

It was supposed to come into effect for this year's All-Ireland championships but Central Council has submitted a motion to next month's Congress seeking to scrap the new rule and GAA President Liam O'Neill said this week the clock/hooter wouldn't work.

Ger Cashman is chairman of the Clonard Club that originally put forward the proposal five years ago and he told The Irish Independent: "Where's the point of clubs bringing forward motions if this is what happens? We cannot understand where the problem is.

"If it (clock/hooter) works so well in ladies football, why not in the men's game? At the very least, it should have been brought in on a trial basis to see how it worked.

"We can't understand that. Why wouldn't it work?"
