It's a long way to Tipperary for Portaferry

Portaferry could be forgiven for feeling aggrieved at the choice of venue for their All-Ireland club SHC semi-final against Kilmallock on February 7.

The Down and Ulster club champions face a 400-mile round trip to Thurles for the game, which will be the first part of a double-header with the other semi-final between Ballyhale Shamrocks and Gort. Parnell Park would surely have been a more central venue for the Portaferry v Kilmallock encounter.

Two years ago, the Antrim U21 hurlers threatened to boycott their All-Ireland final against Clare after it was fixed for Semple Stadium. The controversy proved an unwelcome distraction for the young Saffrons who were duly hammered by the Banner at the Co. Tipperary venue.

Slaughtneil also face a long journey to Portlaoise for their All-Ireland club SFC semi-final against Kerry's Austin Stacks on Sunday, February 15.
