Jack Cooney has joined new Donegal boss Rory Gallagher's backroom team after being snubbed for the manager's job in his native Westmeath.
Cooney was interviewed for the Westmeath post when it became vacant at the end of last year, but despite his cult hero status in the Lake County and the involvement of former stars John Keane and Martin Flanagan in his proposed management team, the selection committee opted for Tom Cribbin instead.
Gallagher was already looking ahead to Wednesday night's crucial McKenna Cup clash with native Fermanagh after his first victory as Donegal manager against Queen's University yesterday.
"They (Fermanagh) were back training before a lot of teams and beating Derry today by three or four points has put them in pole position, but we are not worried about qualifying out of the group as long as we get a good performance and hopefully we can get a win," he said in the Irish News.
"They are going to be fitter, but no more than against Derry or Queen's we are not looking at the opposition. We are trying to improve from game to game. If we could get through to the latter stages of the competition it would be great, but it would be a shock to the system.
"The last two times we played against Fermanagh when I was involved we lost, so hopefully we can put that right on Wednesday."
