Monaghan 0-20
UUJ 2-10
The concession of 2-1 in a frenetic three-minute spell in the closing stages left Monaghan hanging on for victory over UUJ yesterday.
Trailing by nine points with 14 minutes remaining, the students rallied with goals from Caolan O'Boyle and substitute Timmy Meskella to reduce the deficit to two. However, Monaghan responded with three points in quick succession from Daniel McKenna, Brendan McElroy and substitute Patrick Kieran to seal the win.
The sides were level on 0-1 apiece after six minutes before Monaghan took control to lead by 0-8 to 0-3 at the interval. Making his McKenna Cup debut, Mayo All Star Cillian O'Connor opened the second half scoring for Jordanstown from a free, but some fine score-taking saw Malachy O'Rourke's men open up a big lead before UUJ staged their late comeback.
