Eight assaults on Derry officials

The dreaded red card

Derry secretary Danny Scullion has revealed that there were eight cases of assault on match officials at games during the year.

The startling figure highlights the increased abuse that match officials are having to endure at games.

Scullion states in his address to the annual convention this weekend that the 'attitude of some players' will have to change, while referees' co-ordinator condemned the attacks as 'vile and savage behaviour.'

The County Derry Post reports Scullion as stating: "Unfortunately, I have to comment that the level of sportsmanship shown at times at our games throughout the year left a lot to be desired.

"There were instances when referees, match officials, stewards and members of the county board were verbally and physically abused. For the good of Gaelic games, the attitude of some players, mentors and clubs needs to change and be more supportive of the governing bodies."
