A Donegal club player has been handed a 24-week ban by the county board's Competition Controls Committee over a controversial tweet he sent last month, the Irish Independent reports.

David White from the Sean MacCumhaills club in Ballybofey was responding to a tweet from the official Donegal account and made critical comments about fixture-makers in the Tir Chonaill County last month concerning the requirement of a replay instead of extra-time for a quarter-final match between Ardara and Naomh Conaill. He is also understood to have posted a similar message on his Facebook account.

Many have been surprised by the weight of the suspension handed down by the Donegal CCC, which comes after the county board issued a warning last August to its members that they could face disciplinary action over comments made on social media.

The proposed ban for White follows a 48-week suspension for a Derry club player, Aaron Devlin, earlier this month for comments he is alleged to have made on Twitter about officials in the county final that his club Ballinderry lost in controversial circumstances to Slaughtneil.
