Cork All-Ireland winning coach 'the Canon' passes away

The death has occurred of Venerable Archdeacon Michael O'Brien, better known to a generation of Cork GAA supporters as 'the Canon'.

Among many other achievements, the Canon steered Cork to two of their most notable All-Ireland hurling victories in 1984 and 1990.

He guided UCC to eight consecutive Fitzgibbon Cup victories in the 1980s and was President of Blackrock National Hurling Club at the time of his death.

Cork County Board extended its sympathy to the family and friends of the late Archdeacon, who had suffered from a long illness.

Funeral arrangements:

Reception Prayers at 8.00pm on Saturday evening in St. Mary's Church, Innishannon.

Reposing in St. Mary's Church, Innishannon on Sunday from 5.00pm, followed by Rosary at 7.00pm.

Concelebrated Requiem Mass at 12 noon on Monday, followed by burial in the adjoining churchyard.
