Westmeath chairman facing Casserly challenge

Former inter-county referee Pat Casserly is set to challenge incumbent Sean Sheridan for the Westmeath chair at next month's annual convention.

Casserly has been nominated by his club St. Loman's for the position and would be a genuine threat to Sheridan if he decides to run. Tyrrellspass clubman Sheridan still has three more years to serve as chairman under the five-year rule, but has endured a difficult few months, particularly in relation to the appointment of a senior football manager.

A native of Newtowncashel, Co. Longford, Casserly had taken charge of All-Ireland minor, U21 and club finals as well as a National League final before sensationally quitting inter-county refereeing in 1998 after he was overlooked for that year's All-Ireland senior final between Galway and Kildare, with fellow county man John Bannon getting the gig instead.

Meanwhile, former chairman Tom Farrell could be set for a return to the county board after being nominated for the Central Council delegate's position which another ex-chairman, Seamus O Faolain, will vacate under the five-year rule at convention in the Brownstown GAA Community Centre on December 21.
