Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton claims his Cushendall team showed real character in beating Slaughtneil in yesterday's Ulster club SHC semi-final replay.

"We decided after the last day that we would crowd out the midfield and not let their midfield have the influence they did the last day," the former Antrim star told the Belfast Telegraph after Cushendall's 2-10 to 0-10 victory.

"You try these things and sometimes they work. There were a few opportunities to do it. I think that was the best character performance this year. I think that team's only starting to show a bit of character now."

His opposite number Mickey Glover refused to blame Slaughtneil's recent hectic schedule in hurling and football for their Ulster exit.

"The two goals made a massive difference to the game, probably some of the lads did look a bit tired but that's not an excuse. They had a week to recover and we looked after them all week, it just wasn't our day," he said.

"We prepared for it the same as we did the first game but you have to give due credit to Cushendall - they were the better team on the day and they'll probably win Ulster now and that's no disrespect to Portaferry."

Slaughtneil's half a dozen dual players will have a rare weekend off next week before gearing up to face Cavan Gaels in the Ulster club SFC quarter-final on Sunday week, November 9.
