Midfield switch has made Hogan more prolific

Richie Hogan says he found scores easier to come by following his switch to midfield this year.

The Kilkenny ace, who is favourite to land the coveted Hurler of the Year award at tonight's GAA/GPA All Stars banquet, contends that it's easier to score from midfield where the atmosphere isn't as claustrophobic as in the forward line.

"You have more space, you can sometimes actually stand and strike," Hogan explained to the Irish Independent.

"When you're inside in the full forward line, you have to go around the defender and he knows that, but, in midfield, you could end up being free.

"If you ramble into the forwards a lot of the time you're not picked up so, if lads are good enough to find you, you could clean up from there. The funny thing was that I scored more this year, from play, than in others."

Hogan, who revealed how he had rode his bike with his leg in plaster to speed up his recovery from injury, won't be hanging around tonight as his club Danesfort have a Kilkenny SHC quarter-final against Henry Shefflin's Ballyhale Shamrocks tomorrow.

"I'll just go for the TV stuff and part of the meal and get straight out," the 26-year-old said.

"If you were drinking you'd nearly be less tired in the morning, because it's very draining, standing for pictures and that."
