Following hot on the heels of the retirements of Seamus Prendergast and Shane Walsh comes the news that Waterford hurling manager Derek McGrath has released half a dozen players from his panel ahead of the new season.

The Irish Independent is reporting that McGrath - who has just completed his first season in charge - has cut Liam Lawlor, Richie Foley, Jamie Nagle, Ray Barry, Killian Fitzgerald and Stephen Roche from his plans. Lawlor is arguably the biggest omission, having been the Deise's first-choice full back in recent years.

The sextet will be replaced by 2013 All-Ireland minor winners Shane Bennett, Tom Devine, Mark O'Brien, DJ Foran, Michael Kearney and Cormac Curran in McGrath's new-look squad.

The decision by Prendergast and Walsh to retire leaves captain Michael 'Brick' Walsh and former skipper Stephen Molumphy as the only players over 30 on the current panel.
