Waterford's Seamus Prendergast

Kevin Moran has described his Waterford team-mate Seamus Prendergast as "one of the true greats".

34-year-old Prendergast yesterday announced his decision to bring the curtain down on his 14-years in the Deise jersey and, speaking to the Examiner, Moran said: "Seamus will be a huge, huge loss. It will be hard to replace the experience he brought to the table.

"He was one of the true greats, he was one of the team's great leaders. He led on and off the field. His hurling did the talking and then when needed he would offer the required words off the field.

"In the last couple of years he took the panel's younger members under his wing, showed them ropes. His experience was vital.

"Seamus was a guy I looked up to and who showed me the ropes when I came on board.

"Few looked after themselves and trained as hard as Seamus. I remember the 2005 All-Ireland quarter-final against Cork, his battle with Cork's Ronan Curran. Seamus hit four points that day and was simply superb.

"All through the 2004 and 2005 campaigns Seamus was a leading figure."

Meanwhile, Ardmore clubman Prendergast told The Irish Daily Star: "I've had a long and enjoyable career with Waterford, with the only regret being that we failed to win an All-Ireland.

"Of course, we got to the All-Ireland final in 2008, but unfortunately on the day we didn't do ourselves justice against Kilkenny.

"However, I won four Munster medals and we won the League in 2007.

"Over the years I played against a lot of very fine hurlers, with perhaps Noel Hickey (Kilkenny) and Ronan Curran (Cork) being the two backs I found it the most difficult to get the upper hand against."
