Canavan targets Ulster crown

New Cavan Gaels boss Peter Canavan

Peter Canavan is hoping to lead Cavan Gaels to an Ulster club football title.

Having steered the county town side to a thrilling Cavan SFC final victory over Kingscourt on Sunday, the Tyrone legend sees no reason why the new Breffni County kingpins can't compete on the provincial stage:

"I was delighted with the hunger that the boys showed against Kingscourt and it was great to get over the line in that one," he told The Belfast Telegraph. "But now we must try and give the Ulster club championship a good rattle. That won't be easy but I think we can take encouragement from winning this Cavan title.

"There are a lot of good sides in the frame for the Ulster club title but we have to believe that we can meet the demands that will be made on us.

"We have a number of experienced players and this should prove helpful now that we will be stepping up to a higher level. And the younger players will mature quickly by playing against quality opposition."
