Britain GAA chairman issues plea to RTE

October 09, 2014

The chairman of Britain GAA has added his voice to calls to save RTE Radio's longwave 252 kHZ service.

The national broadcaster will pull the plug on its longwave service on October 27, leaving elderly Irish emigrants in particular without access to Radio 1.

"They have been used to being able to switch on their radio and listen to their programmes, whether it's to GAA matches or Joe Duffy, and most of them have no confidence when it comes to dealing with modern technology," Brendie Brien is quoted in the Irish News.

"Many won't even know that the longwave isn't going to be available soon.

"There's going to be a lot of people disappointed when the 252 service goes. I travel around a lot because of my role in the GAA and you'd often see a bunch of fellas standing around a car listening to a match - it's part of life here for a lot of people."
