The Munster GAA Post Primary Schools Dean Ryan Cup Under 16½ A Hurling Quarter-Finals took place on Wednesday October 8th.

Thurles CBS 1-20 St Colmans Fermoy 2-15 (AET)
Thurles CBS came out on top in an enthralling encounter in Cahir. Both teams started well with St Colmans opening the scoring but the Thurles CBS response was immediate when straight from the puck out the ball, they worked the ball down the field and scored a goal in the 5th minute. By the end of the first quarter, Thurles had extended their lead to 1-5 to 0-4 and though the rate of scoring reduced in the run-up to half-time, Thurles were in a dominant position at the interval leading by 1-9 to 0-5.

St. Colmans got back in to contention nine minutes in to the second half when the scored a goal and after good pressure all through the second half, the Cork school drew level with a 56th minute goal. In an exciting finish, Thurles responded with an injury time point only for Colmans to equalise moments later to force the sides to play extra time.

The extra time period was nip and tuck with St. Colmans taking a one point lead on three occasions only to see Thurles draw level each time. When St. Colmans took the lead with three minutes of extra time remaining, it looked as if they may be heading to the semi-finals. However, Thurles left their best until last, scoring 3 unanswered points in the last 3 minutes of extra time to run out two point winners.

Our Ladys Templemore 5-26 Rice College Ennis 1-9
Our Ladys Templemore qualified for the Dean Ryan Cup semi-finals by virtue of a facile 29 point victory over Rice College Ennis at Boher on Wednesday. Despite the teams sharing the first four points of the game, Templemore looked more threatening up front from the beginning and two goals in a three minute spell put the Tipperary school in to a 2-5 to 0-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. A highlight of these early exchanges was a point from play by Our Ladys Templemore from all of 90 metres by their outstanding centre-back Brian McGrath, brother of Senior inter-county star Noel. With wind assistance in the first half, Our Ladys were intent on putting the game out of reach and when their third goal arrived in the 21st minute, the game looked over as a contest. By the interval, Our Ladys led by 3-11 to 0-5.

Rice College needed to make a good start to the second half but instead it was Our Ladys who raised their game, scoring their fourth goal within two minutes of the restart. The majority of the second half thereafter was played in heavy rain as the heavens opened but the Templemore side continued to score at will. Rice College to their credit didn't give up and scored a consolation goal two minutes from the end to leave the final score Our Ladys Templemore 5-26 Rice College Ennis 1-9.

Midleton CBS 4-8 St Flannans 3-8
Defending champions Midleton CBS have qualified for the Dean Ryan Cup semi-finals after a hard earned victory over St. Flannans at Charleville on Wednesday. After a low scoring opening quarter, St. Flannans took the lead with a goal in the 22nd minute. Midleton responded by raising their first green flag two minutes later and the Cork school led by 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time. The second half was just three minutes old when St. Flannans again took the lead with their second goal. Once again, the reply from Midleton was almost immediate as they scored a goal in reply to re-take the lead - 2-5 to 2-4 after 35 minutes. After a low scoring third quarter, Midleton added two more goals in the 49th and 52nd minutes to take a commanding seven point lead. To St. Flannan's credit, the scored a goal and a point to leave just three points between the teams as the game entered injury time. However, Midleton held out for a three point victory and a semi-final place against Charleville CBS.
