Longford SFC final: Killoe goals end Columba's dream

October 05, 2014

Killoe Young Emmets 2-11
Mullinalaghta St. Columba's 0-10

Killoe have lifted the Connolly Cup for a second time in three years and a 10th time in all thanks to a comfortable victory over Mullinalaghta at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.

The result was never really in doubt after goals in the 23rd and 26th minutes from Denis McGoldrick and impressive substitute Larry Moran helped Tommy McCormack's charges to a 2-8 to 0-3 interval lead.

They went 19 minutes without scoring in the second half, but St. Columba's - who were appearing in their first final since 1952 - couldn't get any closer than six points, despite dominating possession and having a strong wind to their backs.

The writing was on the wall for the underdogs when they fell 0-1 to 0-7 in arrears after just 18 minutes. McGoldrick's superb strike extended Killoe's advantage to 1-8 to 0-3 before Moran followed up with a second major three minutes later.

St. Columba's fought back with points from JJ Matthews and James McGivney to leave two goals between the sides, 0-9 to 2-9, with 10 minutes remaining.

But Killoe were able to close out the game with late scores from Moran and Sean McCormack (free).
