Tragedy in Louth as St Patrick's forward dies in accident

September 30, 2014

Eamon Carroll in Louth SFC final action for St Patricks.

The man who lost his life in an accident on the main Dundalk-Carlingford Road this morning has been named as Eamon Carroll.

The 33-year-old was a stalwart of the St Patrick's senior football team and on Sunday had collected his sixth county SFC medal with the Lordship men, having chipped in with a point as Dreadnots were beaten by 1-10 to 1-8 in the county final in Drogheda.

A former Louth junior footballer, Eamon was also on the Joe Ward Cup winning teams of 2003, '04, '07, '11 and '12.

Eamonn was the son of Joe Carroll, a good friend of our office. Joe, a member of the Gaels club in Dundalk, donned the red of Louth at senior level and was the very popular former Sports Editor of the Dundalk Democrat newspaper.

It is believed that the star footballer was struck by the Garda patrol car at around 1.20am this morning.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to his family and friends.
