'The whole thing was a sham': Mayo board member resigns over manager appointment process

Joint Mayo managers Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes celebrate the final whistle in the 2006 Cadbury All-Ireland U21FC final against Cork - INPHO

The process which saw Mayo appoint Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes as their new football management has led to the resignation of an Executive Member of the County Committee.

Gerry Bourke has resigned from the executive reports today's edition of the Mayo News.

The county's Cultural Officer claims that during a meeting on Friday night it was agreed to hold interviews with the two candidates nominated for the role - the Connelly/Holmes ticket and Kevin McStay.

However, it appears that McStay was informed on Saturday morning that Connelly and Holmes were the preferred choice, with no interviews taking place and then an official statement confirmed the new management team on Saturday evening.

"I'm not happy with the way in which this whole scenario was handled," Bourke told the Mayo News. "It was totally mishandled by the officers of the board.

"I left the Executive meeting on Friday night thinking it was one of the best meetings of the Officer Board I was ever at, only to discover the next day that the whole thing was a sham. It appears the deal was done before the meeting.

"It's terrible for Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes, I have huge sympathy for them being dragged into this in the wrong way.

"Being appointed managers of Mayo should be a most joyful thing for them but the appointment has been tainted by how it has been handled through no fault of Pat's or Noel's."
